This paper is about the synthesis of different ideas from various sources. I have the topic of Susan Sontag, who wrote about how viewers cannot empathise with the pictures depicting trauma and suffering, and how they can be manipulated by the photographer.
Almost all of the scholars I found agree with her ideas, with a few exceptions, and I, too, can relate to her opinions. People with inherited trauma from their ancestry cannot fully empathise with the pictures, and it is hard to force totally unrelated people to understand the suffering. Take myself for an example–I can say that I owe the inherited trauma from the Nanjing Slaughter during World War II, but when I look at the photographs depicting the slaughter, my initial reaction would still be “so what”, instead of immediate emotional relation to them. If I cannot fully empathise with the photos, then how can we expect people, unrelated viewers, to understand the trauma behind it?paper-2-for-profile
